Automotive Coating Treatment System

One of the longest, most technically complex and environmentally demanding processes in modern automobile manufacturing — determining both the aesthetic quality (color, gloss) and the first line of corrosion defense for every vehicle body.

A complete automotive coating system consists of core processes — pretreatment, electrophoresis, sealing/adhesive, primer, basecoat, clearcoat and inspection — organized into six major systems: body transport, pretreatment & electrophoresis, grinding & sealing, spraying, drying oven, and exhaust-gas environmental treatment.

SYZOY designs and integrates turnkey coating lines and brownfield upgrades for passenger cars and commercial vehicles, engineered for production targets from 30 to 120 JPH. Every booth, oven and conveyor is validated with CFD and structural analysis before fabrication.

Pretreatment system

1. Pretreatment System

The pretreatment system delivers a clean metal surface with appropriate roughness for maximum coating adhesion.

  • Pre-cleaning / Degreasing: high-pressure water and alkaline degreasing agents remove stamping oil, rust-proof oil and dust.
  • Traditional Phosphating: a dense zinc-phosphate crystalline film enhances electrophoretic adhesion and corrosion resistance.
  • New Film Technology: zirconium-salt silane treatment — more environmentally friendly, less residue, room-temperature operation.

2. Electrophoresis (ED) System

The electrophoresis system is the key process ensuring 10+ years of corrosion resistance for the body.

  • Cathodic Electrophoresis: the body is immersed in the ED bath with DC current applied; positively charged epoxy-resin paint particles deposit onto the body, forming a uniform primer layer.
  • UF Cleaning: ultrafiltration liquid recovers removed paint and prevents pinholes in the film.
  • Film thickness: 18-25 µm with ±2 µm uniformity via rectifier and anode management.

3. Drying Oven System

The drying oven cures each coating layer through controlled thermal stages:

  • Solvent / Moisture Evaporation: organic solvents or water flash off during initial heating.
  • Leveling & Melting: resin particles melt and flow, reducing surface tension to eliminate orange peel and brush marks.
  • Crosslinking Reaction: at target temperature (180°C for ED paint, 140-160°C for clearcoat) resin functional groups polymerize into an irreversible 3D network. CFD-optimized airflow holds ±3°C uniformity.

4. Conveyor System

The conveyor accurately and stably transfers the white body between process stations. Coating conveyors have evolved from ground chains to pendulum, skid and multifunctional shuttles.

  • Pendulum Conveyor: the body hangs on a swing arm that pivots up and down for dip processes.
  • Multifunctional Shuttle: automatic, independently operating transport carts for flexible routing.
  • Rotational Dip System: 360° body rotation after clamping for optimal tank entry and drainage.

5. Spraying System

The spraying system is the most core and precise part of the coating workshop — directly determining final color, gloss, brightness and paint utilization. Modern lines are dominated by robotic automatic spraying.

  • Paint supply & mixing system with automatic dosing and rapid color change.
  • Spraying robots & rotary atomizers converting liquid paint into fine, uniformly charged droplets.
  • Booth environment control and overspray capture (wet venturi / dry-curtain separation).

6. Exhaust-Gas Treatment System

RTO (Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer) is the core environmental equipment for treating painting VOCs (benzene, toluene, xylene) from booths and ovens.

  • Exhaust is heated to 760-850°C; VOC molecules oxidize into harmless CO₂ and water vapor — purification efficiency typically >99%.
  • Ceramic heat-storage media recover combustion heat to preheat incoming exhaust, achieving ≥95% heat recovery.
